The Hunters
Three enter the bayou; one team walks out with the blood money.
The Hunters are the bounty-hunting operatives who descend into the cursed bayou under the Company's contract. Operating in squads of three, they are not a unified army but a ragged collection of gunslingers, priests, outlaws, and specialists, each bound to the same brutal objective: track down and slay the Hunt—the monstrous aberrations birthing from the curse—and then outlive every rival team still breathing in the swamp. They are the Company's scalpel, sent in to cut the infection at its source, one beast at a time.
In practice, the Hunters are as much prey as predator. The moment the Hunt falls, the bayou's true law takes hold: only one squad of three walks out with the bounty. The others become obstacles, and the curse-slicked mud remembers every body left in it.

Lore & Background
No one in the bayou can say precisely when the curse took root. What is known is that the water turned, the animals turned, and the land began excreting things that should not exist. The Company, ever the pragmatist, did not attempt to cure the infection. Instead, it posted bounties. The Hunters are the answer to a question the Company refused to ask: *what do we do about it?* The answer was always the same—send someone with a rifle, a grudge, and a price tag.
The Hunters are not heroes in any clean sense. Some are there for the payout, some for a debt, some because the bayou is the only place their hands stop shaking. They carry a strange, unspoken solidarity with the very curse they fight: they need the Hunt to exist, because without a beast to kill there is no bounty, and without the bounty there is no reason to step into the muck. The Company feeds them contracts; they feed the Company a tidy ledger of dead monsters. It is a closed loop, and everyone in it knows it.
What the Hunters do not always discuss, over whiskey or in the quiet after a kill, is that the curse seems to *respond* to them. The beasts grow stranger each season. The bayou grows larger, or at least more hostile. And the Hunters themselves begin to carry something in their blood that they cannot name—a restlessness, a hunger that no amount of gunpowder or scripture satisfies. The Company's ledgers, of course, record none of this.
In Their Own Story
The fog rolled in at dusk, thick as wet wool, swallowing the cypress roots whole. Mara wiped the last of the blood from her knife and checked the barrel of her rifle one more time. Behind her, Tomás was already counting his powder, and old Yuki sat cross-legged on a rotting log, humming a prayer in a language neither of them recognized.
The Hunt had been dead for eleven minutes. Its carcass still steamed in the black water, and the stench was a wall of its own. Somewhere out in the grey, a gunshot cracked—close, too close. Then another. They were not alone.
"They see the bounty," Tomás said, not looking up.
Mara racked the bolt. "Then we make sure they see us first."
The bayou swallowed the rest of the evening. By morning, the Company's ledger would show one line: *Hunt killed. One team paid.* It would not show the other two, or the mud that took them, or the way the water had whispered their names back to them as they sank.
Reader's Guide
STATED PURPOSE: The Hunters exist to execute the Company's bounty contracts—locate, track, and kill the Hunt designated for each engagement. Their secondary, implicit purpose is to reduce the threat the curse poses to the surrounding settlements by removing its physical manifestations.
TRUE RELATIONSHIP TO THE CURSE: The Hunters are functionally symbiotic with the curse. They require it to generate targets; the curse appears to require them to propagate. The Company treats the Hunters as disposable instruments. The Hunters, for their part, treat the Company as a necessary evil that writes the checks. Neither side acknowledges the growing evidence that the curse is adapting to the Hunters' methods, producing increasingly resistant and intelligent aberrations.
GOALS AND METHODS: Individual Hunters are motivated by money, redemption, obsession, or survival. Their methods are varied—ranged precision, close-quarters butchery, alchemical sabotage, spiritual warding—but the operational doctrine is uniform: kill the Hunt, then kill or outrun the competition. The Company enforces this through the bounty structure itself; no external arbitration exists inside the bayou.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER FACTIONS: The Hunters are the Company's primary field asset. They operate independently of any other organized group. The curse is not a faction but a force; the Hunters fight its symptoms, not its source. Rival Hunter teams are the only true adversaries, and the bayou itself is the third.
WHAT IT WANTS FROM THOSE WHO ENTER: The bayou wants a body. The Company wants a dead beast and a clean ledger. The Hunters want to leave alive. All three desires are in direct conflict, and the mud keeps the score.
Did You Know?
- The Hunters operate in fixed squads of three, and the game's structure ensures that only one squad can claim the bounty after the Hunt is slain—making every other team an existential threat the moment the monster dies.
- The Hunters are not a single organization but a rotating cast of distinct archetypes—gunslingers, priests, outlaws, specialists—each with their own kit, philosophy, and reason for stepping into the bayou.
- The curse is never fully explained or cured in the narrative; the Hunters treat it as an ongoing, worsening condition, suggesting the bayou's infection is self-sustaining and possibly accelerating.
- The Company's relationship to the Hunters is transactional and distant: it posts bounties, collects results, and provides no rescue, no backup, and no accountability once a squad enters the swamp.
