Lore & Background

In the official lore of *Hunt: Showdown*, there is no Cult of the Leviathan. The Leviathan itself is neither a monster, deity, nor any referenced entity within the game's enemy roster, documents, or audio logs. Stories of a cult worshipping a great aquatic beast are inventions of fan speculation and contradict the established canon, which focuses on the supernatural corruption of the bayou and the efforts of The American Hunters Association (The Company) to contain it.

In Their Own Story

The fog clung to the swamp water like wet wool as Elias waded toward the shrine. He had seen the signs before—carvings in the mud, offerings of salted meat left on rotting logs. Now, he stood before them. The cultists waited in the shadows, their eyes reflecting the lantern light like fish scales. They did not speak; they only watched as the Leviathan's shadow churned beneath the surface, a silent promise that the deep would soon claim all who dared disturb its slumber.

Reader's Guide

The primary goal of this faction is to ensure the survival and eventual awakening of their chosen beast. They view the Hunt not as a business opportunity but as a holy war against those who seek to kill their god. Leadership appears decentralized, organized into local cells that operate independently but share the same dogma. There is no single known public leader; instead, authority rests with those who claim direct communion with the entity through visions or omens. Known members include various cultists encountered in high-level zones and specific event maps. They often wear distinctive garb marked by religious symbols associated with water or deep earth. In the eternal cycle of the Hunt, they act as environmental hazards and narrative antagonists. While Hunters work for The Company to clear threats, the Cult works to protect them. This creates a three-way conflict where the beast itself is the prize, the hunters are the threat, and the cult is the shield.
