The Doctor

Where others bring death to the bayou, he brings the chance to survive it.

The Doctor is one of the Hunters who descend upon the cursed bayou to compete in the Company's deadly spectacle. A former physician stripped of his standing, he carries a syringe of his own concoction and a heavy shotgun, serving as the Hunt's primary source of field medicine. Where other Hunters rely on brute force or trickery, The Doctor's value lies in keeping his allies alive long enough to turn the tide of a firefight.

In the broader ecosystem of the Hunt, he occupies the support niche: his Cure ability lets him inject himself or a nearby Hunter to restore lost health, making him a linchpin in coordinated teams. His presence shifts the calculus of engagements, because a wounded Hunter who can be patched mid-fight is a far more dangerous opponent than one who bleeds out in the mud.

Lore & Background

Before the Company's charter turned the bayou into a killing ground, The Doctor practiced medicine in a world that demanded clean hands and honest ledgers. His downfall came not from malpractice but from a refusal to look away—treating patients the powerful wished to see die, or perhaps prescribing where he should have operated. The specifics are muddied by time and self-justification, but the result was the same: his license revoked, his name blacked out of the registries, his career reduced to a footnote in some municipal scandal.

The Company found him in that hollowed-out life and offered a simple proposition: trade your white coat for a shotgun, your clinic for the bayou, and your patients for fellow Hunters who will pay in blood what no insurance company would. He accepted, not from desperation alone, but from a grim conviction that the only surgery left to him was the one performed under fire, with no anesthetic and no second chance.

In the Hunt itself, The Doctor is a paradox. He is a man whose entire identity is built on preservation of life, yet he wields a weapon designed to shatter it. His syringe is both his greatest virtue and his most intimate confession: every injection is a small act of defiance against the entropy the Company has imposed on the swamp. He does not kill to heal; he heals so that the killing might, for a few more seconds, be survivable.

In Their Own Story

The alligator's lair reeked of rot and old copper. The Doctor knelt in the black water, his boots sinking to the ankle, and pressed the cold glass barrel of his shotgun against the mud for stability. Thirty yards out, his partner—a young woman with a rifle and a shaking jaw—crawled through the reeds, a gash splitting her forearm, blood pooling in the water with each drag.

He didn't call to her. There was no time. The Company's hounds were already circling, their lanterns cutting orange wedges through the fog. He racked the shotgun, felt the double chambers click home, and raised the barrel toward the nearest light.

She reached him. He saw the white of her teeth, the way her fingers fumbled at her own wound. He set the shotgun down in the muck, uncapped the syringe from his coat, and drove the needle into the meat of her shoulder. The hiss of the plunger was the only sound in the world.

Her breathing steadied. His did not.

He picked the shotgun back up, spat into the water, and aimed at the lanterns. "Stay down," he told her, in the flat voice of a man who had long ago stopped asking permission. "I've got the rest."

Reader's Guide

From the Company Archive, File 7-C: On the Registration of Physician-Class Hunters

It is recorded that the Company, in its charter of operations, permits any individual of sufficient resolve to enter the Hunt, regardless of prior trade or standing. Yet certain Hunters are catalogued separately. The Physician—known in the field simply as the Doctor—occupies a category of his own, for his purpose in the swamp is not to add to the tally of the fallen but to subtract from it.

His instrument of choice is the double-barrel shotgun, a weapon of close and absolute consequence. At range, it is little different from any other Hunter's arm. But his true instrument is the syringe: a vial of his own preparation, administered to himself or to a Hunter within arm's reach. The effect is swift. The wound closes. The color returns. The one who was dying is, for a measure of seconds, no longer dying.

The Company's rules do not prohibit the use of such aid. They do, however, note in a dry footnote that the syringe is single-use per engagement and that the Company bears no liability for the quality of the preparation. The Doctor, for his part, has never once let a vial go to waste. He has also, by all accounts, never once let a partner die within reach of the needle.

The bayou keeps its own ledger. The Doctor keeps his.
